Definition: What is Trip Cancellation coverage?

Trip Cancellation coverage is a key benefit on most Travel Guard travel insurance plans and provides coverage for certain expenses you may have pre-paid and that are nonrefundable when you need to cancel your trip (as long as it’s a covered reason). Your travel insurance plan can provide more details, but things like canceling for certain work reasons, jury duty or illness of yourself or a family member are typically reasons that would be covered with the trip cancellation benefit on your Travel Guard travel insurance plan.

How do I use the Trip Cancellation benefit if I need to cancel my trip?

Cancel your trip with your travel suppliers directly – like the airline, cruise, tour company, or travel advisor that you originally booked with. If there are any costs or fees that you are not refunded, you can submit the necessary claim documentation to Travel Guard to request reimbursement for covered costs.

What documentation do I need to file a claim for Trip Cancellation?

The specific documentation needed for your trip cancellation claim will depend on the reason you’re cancelling and what you originally had booked. Below is a list of documentation that may be required.

  • Travel Guard claim form
  • Documentation to support the reason for cancelling your trip
  • Proof of travel/reservations
  • Proof of payment for the trip
  • Cancellation terms from the travel supplier

There may be additional documents required based on your specific claim. You can start a claim online with our claims portal or you can call us directly if you have specific questions.

Example Scenario:

You’ve planned a trip to Colorado for some amazing hiking in the Rocky Mountains with your two best friends. Three weeks before you’re set to leave, one of your Traveling Companions breaks their ankle and will be wearing an orthopedic boot for the next six weeks. Their doctor says travel is out of the question. You don’t want to go without your friend, so you all decide to cancel your trip and make plans for another time.

In this scenario – your Traveling Companion is cancelling due to a medical reason. A physician imposing travel restrictions on yourself, a Family Member, or a Traveling Companion because of an Injury or Sickness could be a covered reason to cancel your trip on most Travel Guard travel insurance plans. With necessary documentation you can file your claim with Travel Guard* to be reimbursed for those covered pre-paid and nonrefundable costs you can’t get back from your travel supplier. Always be sure to read the complete terms and conditions of your travel insurance plan before booking to help insure you chose the coverage you need!

Reviews and Testimonials

We had to cancel our trip since my husband’s 93-year-old aunt had to be hospitalized and was in very critical condition. We always use Travel Guard when we travel and have always been very pleased with your service. When I contacted you that we needed to cancel our trip, the representative made it easy and clear what was expected from me to substantiate my claim request. The claim was processed very quickly. I will always use Travel Guard for all our travel insurance needs and will continue to recommend you to our family and friends. Thank you again for all your help and for getting us the refund for our trip. You’re a great company to work with!
