Plus, our specially trained representatives can help you adjust your travel plans, rebook flights and get you back home.*
*Expenses incurred from third-party vendors for assistance services not part of a filed insurance plan are the responsibility of the traveler.
Trip Interruption coverage begins when you start your trip. It provides protection for your travel investment if a covered reason causes you to miss a portion of the trip or stop the trip completely and return home early. Trip Interruption can reimburse you for parts of your trip that you miss, as well as additional transportation costs incurred to continue the trip or return home.
When your trip is cut short or you face a significant delay, you can make any changes to your trip directly through your travel suppliers, such as the airline or cruise you booked with originally. If you need additional help making new reservations or booking transportation, our 24/7 emergency travel assistance team can help you at 800.826.5248. Once your travels are complete and you’ve returned home, you can submit your claim with the required documentation and request to be reimbursed for any covered expenses.
The specific documentation needed for your Trip Interruption claim will depend on the reason for interruption and what expenses you incurred. Listed below are examples of documentation that may be required.
There may be additional documents required based on your specific claim. You can start the process of filing a claim online with our claims portal or you can call us directly if you have specific questions.
You’re on vacation in Mexico with a few days left before your vacation ends. Suddenly, you learn an immediate family member back home is sick with no one to take care of them, as required by the family member’s Physician, so you need to cut your vacation short and head home early. You cancel the remaining days at your hotel and call Travel Guard for help with getting a new flight home. Because your new flight is last-minute, the price is more than your original flight – and you have a change fee to pay. Luckily, you have Travel Guard.
In this scenario, because interrupting your trip due to a sick Family Member at home (according to the definition of Family Member in your travel insurance plan) who needs your immediate care, as confirmed by a Physician, is a covered event, you would likely have coverage available to get reimbursed for your expenses to get home. Travel Guard recognizes that last minute travel tends to be more expensive, which is why you’ll usually see benefit limits over 100% of your trip cost (often 150%) for Trip Interruption on a Travel Guard travel insurance plan. You can then claim those extra expenses and fees with Travel Guard and request to be reimbursed for those costs, in addition to a prorated amount for the unused nights at your hotel if nonrefundable by the hotel. Remember to read your travel insurance plan’s complete terms and conditions before booking to help ensure you have the coverages you may need. All claims under Travel Guard travel insurance plans must be reviewed by the appropriate claims personnel.
The biggest difference between these benefits is when the coverage is provided. Trip Cancellation provides coverage from the day after you purchase the travel insurance plan, until departure. Trip Interruption provides coverage once your trip starts up until you arrive back home. For more information, be sure to review your travel insurance plan details.
Sometimes you score an amazing deal on flights, which is great! Until you need to travel home in the middle of your trip unexpectedly. Because the standard Trip Interruption benefit limits are typically a percentage of your original trip cost, that might not leave you with enough coverage for your last-minute flight home. Trip Interruption – Return Transportation Only can help in this situation. Rather than a percentage, the benefit offers a flat amount of coverage to file a claim against (typically between $500 and $1,000). The two Trip Interruption coverages can’t be combined, and our Travel Guard team can help you figure out which option works best for you.
Yes! While a travel insurance plan may seem like just another expense up front, coverages like Trip Interruption can offer extra peace of mind, providing protection for your travel investment and the extra unexpected costs associated with ending your trip early.
Trip Interruption coverage comes as part of the standard coverages on most Travel Guard travel insurance plans. You can purchase a travel insurance plan to cover your trip up until the day before your departure. However, it should be noted that a loss must be considered “unforeseen” for coverage to apply, so waiting to buy a plan until you know something will interrupt your trip will not help. It’s best to get the protection in place early.
Situations that are covered under Trip Interruption are unforeseen events and circumstances that leave you unable to continue your travels. For example, Sickness or Injury to yourself, a Traveling Companion or family member may qualify you for coverage. Other events like severe weather or natural disasters may lead to a covered reason to interrupt a trip as well. A complete list of covered reasons and exclusions can be found in your policy of insurance.
When you’re looking at travel insurance plans, it’s important to understand what you are purchasing. The best way to do this is to read over the policy of insurance.
My husband and I took a two-week Caribbean cruise. During the second week, he developed severe bronchitis and was treated for four days in the ship’s clinic. We called our daughter (back at home), who immediately contacted Travel Guard on our behalf to start the claims process--which was seamless. After we returned home, I submitted all bills for which we were reimbursed very quickly. There was absolutely no aggravation. Working with Travel Guard could not have been a better experience at a very stressful time. As a result, we have purchased Travel Guard three times since and will continue to be loyal customers. The peace of mind gained by being a Travel Guard customer cannot be overstated. Travel Guard exceeded my expectations. Thank you, Travel Guard!
