Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver

With Travel Guard’s Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver – you could have the coverage you need.

Get medical expense coverage, even for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions, when you pack Travel Guard.

Travel Guard’s Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver removes the Pre-Existing Medical Conditions exclusion from applicable coverages in your travel insurance plan where it may prevent you from otherwise having coverage. Purchase your travel insurance plan within 15 days (or the period provided in the travel insurance plan) of your initial trip deposit to qualify for the waiver.

What is the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver?

Travel Guard’s Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver is a time-sensitive feature available when you purchase your travel insurance plan within 15 days of your initial trip deposit date. Without the waiver, costs associated with obtaining treatment for a Pre-Existing Medical Condition, as defined in the travel insurance plan, while traveling would not be covered. There is no medical evaluation to get the waiver, you just need to meet the following three conditions:

  • Purchase the travel insurance plan with your first trip deposit, or shortly thereafter as explained in the travel insurance plan details;
  • The amount of coverage purchased equals all prepaid, non-refundable trip payments or deposits, and the cost of any subsequent arrangements added to the same trip are insured by the date of payment or deposit for the additional arrangements;
  • You and other insured travelers are medically able to travel when your travel insurance plan is purchased.

How do I use the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver during my trip?

If you experience a medical situation while traveling, seek medical attention first. There is nothing additional you need to do in order to have medical expense coverage for your Pre-Existing Medical Conditions while you’re traveling if the waiver is in place. Once your travels are complete, and you’ve returned home, you can submit your claim with the required documentation and request to be reimbursed for any covered expenses.

What documentation do I need to file a claim for my Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

The specific documentation needed to file a medical expense coverage claim will depend on the treatment needed from your Sickness or Injury, as those terms are defined in your travel insurance plan, and the out-of-pocket expenses you incurred.

Below is a list of documentation that may be required.

  • Travel Guard claim form
  • Discharge records of injury or illness and treatments
  • Copies of bills, receipts, invoices and relevant bank statements
  • Incident report detailing how injury occurred

There may be additional documents required based on your specific claim. You can start the process of filing a claim online with our claims portal or you can call us directly if you have specific questions.

Example Scenario:

While in Greece you experience an arthritis flare-up in your knee that you’ve had issues with in the past. You want to seek treatment from a physician in order to continue on your trip with less pain. You visit a qualified physician who prescribes pain medication, and you’re on your way to continue exploring.

In this scenario, arthritis could be considered a pre-existing medical condition since you’ve had issues in the past. If you have the Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Exclusion Waiver, you could have coverage for the expenses incurred seeking treatment. Save all documentation related to treatment, and you can file a claim once you’re home to request reimbursement. Remember to read your travel insurance plan details before booking to help ensure you have the coverages you may need.  All claims under Travel Guard travel insurance plans must be reviewed by the appropriate claims personnel.

More Common Questions

If you are a traveler with any pre-existing medical condition (like so many of us), it’s worth it. Even if you haven’t experienced issues with your medical condition recently, you never know what may come up while traveling.

Yes, you can still purchase a travel insurance plan with medical expense coverage without the waiver. Your medical expense coverage will exclude Pre-Existing Medical Conditions, but you could have coverage for new Injuries or Sicknesses that occur while traveling.

When you’re looking at travel insurance plans, it’s important to understand what you are purchasing. The best way to do this is to read over the policy of insurance.

Reviews and Testimonials

On day three of my trip to Maui, I was hit by a rogue wave that broke my collarbone and four ribs. I immediately called Travel Guard and they were very helpful and walked me through all my needs at that point. It was nice talking to a sympathetic person. When I returned home, they were helpful with my claim for reimbursement of medical bills on the island and paid for most everything that wasn’t covered by my other insurance. So grateful I had Travel Guard to call. Thank you!
