U.S. travelers visiting Austria less than 90 days aren’t required to have a travel insurance plan, unless traveling on a Schengen visa. However, the U.S. Department of State website strongly recommends having a travel insurance plan to cover certain situations like medical evacuation. Your U.S. healthcare plan may not provide international coverage, so having a travel insurance plan can help provide the coverage you may need for your Austrian trip.
Travel Guard’s Deluxe Plan is a great option for travelers heading to Austria as it offers the highest benefit limits on coverages such as Trip Interruption, Travel Medical Expense and Baggage Coverage. That extra luggage coverage is especially helpful if you’re traveling with expensive winter gear for a ski vacation or planning to bring home some of Austria’s famous artisanal chocolates in bulk (great idea)! The Deluxe Plan also includes Travel Inconvenience Benefits, which can provide you with a flat payment when certain travel disruptions impact your vacation, which may include lack of snow at a ski resort or rental home lockout. Plus, all Travel Guard travel insurance plans include 24/7 emergency travel assistance so you’re not left to handle the unexpected on your own.

There are several factors that come into play when pricing your plan, which may include the product you select and the number of travelers in your party. The official currency in Austria is the Euro. Travelers can exchange currency before their departure at most U.S. banks or at a currency kiosk in the airport. Most major cities in Austria will also have currency exchange available at ATMs, currency exchange storefronts and some banks, just be sure to check the exchange rate beforehand to help get the best rates. Debit and credit cards are widely accepted, be sure to inform your bank of your trips to avoid interruption. If you’re planning to visit one of Austria’s famous Christmas markets, you’ll want to be sure and have Euros on hand in case cards aren’t accepted.
The official language of Austria is German though Croatian, Slovenian and Hungarian are spoken throughout the country as well. While a large portion of the population in Austria speaks some level of English, learning key phrases in German will get you further than expecting Austrians to converse in English. Consider a translation app that works offline to increase your communication ability even further!
A visa is not required for U.S. Citizens staying less than 90 days in Austria. Travel over 90 days will require a Visa which needs to be applied for no later than 15 days before traveling. You’ll also need a valid passport for entry with at least six months of validity and two blank pages for your entry stamps.

Austria is a popular winter destination for ski enthusiasts looking to hit the slopes in mountain resort towns like Kitzbuhelor Ischgl. Austria is also world famous for beautiful Christmas markets that typically run from Mid-November through New Years. Because of the popularity lodging and resort prices tend to increase during this time, so be sure and book early. The dial code for Austria is +43, which is used to call landlines and mobile phones in the country. Remember to use the exit code of +11 when placing international calls from the U.S. and include the area code of the city or town you’re calling. When calling internationally, landlines are typically more affordable than connecting to a cell phone so be sure to contact your phone provider for cost estimates and to let them know of your travel plans to best avoid unwanted interruptions in your service.
Since Austria uses both a different voltage and outlet type than the U.S., you will need a power transformer and an outlet adaptor to use your electronics on your trip. We recommended a universal adaptor that can be used on other trips in the future.
