Bermuda Travel Tips and Safety Information

Is Bermuda Safe to Visit?

Bermuda is a British overseas island with beautiful beaches, historic sites and no shortage of outdoor activities. It is also a fairly low-risk destination, though visitors should be mindful of some security and safety concerns.

Petty crimes such as pickpocketing, theft of unattended items, hotel break-ins, theft from motorbikes, vehicle break-ins and tourist scams are an issue. Petty criminals are especially active in crowded tourist areas and on public transportation. Travelers should keep a close eye on their belongings and avoid carrying valuables or large amounts of cash. It is also advisable to keep money, credit cards and important travel documents in a hotel safe. More serious crimes, such as muggings, assaults and incidents associated with gang activity, also occur in Bermuda. Visitors should avoid isolated areas and should exercise caution after dark, particularly in areas around bars and nightlife venues.

Road safety is another important consideration in Bermuda. Tourists are not allowed to rent or drive cars, so non-residents are limited to buses, ferries, taxis or rental scooters. If renting scooters, it is very important to always wear helmets and exercise caution, especially if you are not accustomed to driving on the left-hand side of the road. The island has narrow and winding roads, and accidents involving motorbikes are common.

For outdoor adventures, it is best to book activities through reputable tour providers in advance of travel. For activities such as snorkeling and diving, visitors should be cautious of strong currents and rip tides. Always swim in designated areas and heed local warnings.

In terms of natural disasters, Bermuda is prone to hurricanes. Travelers should stay informed about weather conditions and follow any directives issued by local authorities in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm.

All U.S. travelers should consider enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service offered to U.S. citizens traveling and living abroad. Enrolling in this program allows you to receive important information from the embassy as well as helps the embassy contact you in an emergency.

What currency is used in Bermuda?

The official currency of Bermuda is the Bermudan dollar. Though the U.S. dollar isn’t an official currency of Bermuda, it is often used interchangeably with the Bermudan dollar, though any change from a purchase is likely to be in Bermudan dollars. If you find you need Bermudan dollars on your travels, you can exchange currency at an airport exchange kiosk or an ATM in Bermuda. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, just be sure to let your bank know of your travel plans to help avoid losing access to your finances.

What language is spoken in Bermuda?

The official language of Bermuda is English, which means English-speaking travelers from the U.S. should easily be able to navigate signage throughout the country and communicate easily with locals.

Do I need a visa or passport to travel to Bermuda?

Travelers do not need a visa for entry to Bermuda, though a valid passport with one blank page is required.

How do I contact the U.S. Embassy in Bermuda?

What is the weather like in Bermuda?

Bermuda has a subtropical climate with hot summers lasting from June to September and mild winters from November to March. Rainfall is common throughout the year, though October tends to be the wettest month while April and May tend to have the least rain.

When is the best time of year to visit Bermuda?

The most popular time to visit Bermuda is from May to September when temperatures are high, and rainfall is low. Bermuda’s shoulder season, March to April, can offer better deals and fewer crowds while still giving tourists beautiful weather to enjoy. What is the dial code for phoning to and from Bermuda?
