Travelers should exercise caution when visiting Belize. Petty and violent crime is prevalent throughout the country, even in tourist areas. Gang violence is a serious concern; while gang activity does not usually directly target travelers, outbreaks of violence between rival groups can pose a significant risk to bystanders. For these reasons, it is important to stay aware of your surroundings, travel in groups instead of traveling alone, avoid walking or driving at night, do not physically resist robbery attempts and do not display signs of wealth.
Security concerns are especially high in Belize City, and several governments have warned against travel to the city – especially the Southside area. If you do plan to travel to Belize City, avoid the Southside and be extremely vigilant elsewhere in the city.
Visit the U.S. Department of State website for up-to-date information on travel advisory levels and safety information for travelers to the Belize.
All U.S. travelers should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service offered to U.S. citizens traveling and living abroad. Enrolling in this program allows you to receive important information from the embassy as well as helps the embassy contact you in an emergency.
