Game Day Checklist

Little League® x Travel Guard

As Little League® Baseball and Little League® Softball seasons kick-off around the U.S., parents are likely already preparing for game days, both at home and away. Whether it's a 40-minute drive to a nearby town or a few hours drive to an out-of-state game, it can be hard to have everything prepared. So, we've partnered with Little League to put together packing checklists to help prepare you for the upcoming season.

Checklist For the Drive

During baseball and softball season, you’ll probably be more acquainted with your car than you want to be. You can help alleviate some of the stress that comes with so much driving by preparing in advance with these helpful tips.

Download your route

If you're unfamiliar with the drive, downloading an offline map can help you avoid getting lost. Remember to plan your route in advance to help track your course as you go. Finally, make note of rest stops or restaurants you may want to visit during your travel, to avoid in-the-moment decisions.

Pack entertainment

It can be difficult to keep kids entertained during long trips, but packing coloring books or games to play can help. You can play classic road-trip games like:

  • I spy
  • Road trip bingo to spot landmarks
  • Baseball and softball trivia
  • 20 questions
  • Rock, paper, scissors

Charge Electronics

Charge tablets, cellphones and other electronics in advance so no one is disappointed by a dead battery. Pack a charging cable compatible with your vehicle's USB port or a portable charger to make it easier to share devices.

Make a Playlist

Music is a fantastic way to stay entertained whether you’re sharing tunes with the family or using headphones to create a little oasis. You can make a playlist with your family to make sure everyone has their own input and turn it into a game by having the group guess who picked which song. Or, if you or your little ones enjoy quiet time, you might make a separate, more relaxing playlist to enjoy with headphones on.

Bring Snacks

Packing snacks and drinks for the road can make the trip easier on everyone. Instead of having to divert from the route you have planned when someone is hungry, you can offer a snack they’ll love to hold them over until you reach your next stop.

Get Comfortable

Depending on how long the drive is, you may want to bring travel pillows and blankets to stay cozy in the car. This way passengers can catch up on sleep or take naps to avoid crankiness and keep spirits up before, or after, big games.

Be Prepared

It’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit readily available in case someone gets hurt. Whether it’s a bad headache, a scratch or even an intense bug bite, a good first aid kit will include the items you need to handle any issues that arise.

Baseball and Softball Season/Outdoor Checklist

Once baseball and softball season are in full swing, you might want to keep the car packed so you have everything you need readily available. Before the season begins, we’ll help you go over the essential items to pack along with helpful options that make game days easier.

Equipment

Sometimes the most obvious items are the ones we forget. Before heading out to the game, make sure your Little League player has packed their equipment, including:

  • Glove
  • Bat
  • Batting bag
  • Batting helmet
  • Cleats
  • Batting gloves

Team Uniform

For long trips where your Little League player isn’t already in uniform, you’ll want to keep a checklist of the items they need to make packing easier on everyone.  For game days, your player should always have their uniform, including:

  • Jersey
  • Pants
  • Socks
  • Cap
  • Belt

Dress in Layers

In the springtime, weather can be a bit unpredictable which means you’ll need to prepare for different conditions from cloudy, windy days to overbearing sunshine. You can prepare by keeping an extra set of clothes on hand or dress in easy-to-remove layers to help adjust your body temperature.

Outdoor protection

Game days can be long and sitting in the bleachers for hours is uncomfortable, no matter how old you are. You can create a space to view the game in comfort by packing items like:

  • Canopy tent
  • Folding chairs
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Bug repellent

Tournament Checklist

As teams advance to State and Regional tournaments, you’ll have to plan longer drives and nights away from home. Here are some things to keep in mind as your Little League player gets ready for the competition.

Book a hotel

For away games that are far from home, you’ll want to make sure you already have lodging booked so you and your Little League player can focus on the game. Use a booking website to compare prices between hotels to help you find the accommodations you want within your price range. Then, book directly from the hotel for lower costs and the ability to gain and spend membership points. For trips over 100 miles from home, consider adding a Travel Guard travel insurance plan to your check list to provide coverage for prepaid and nonrefundable lodging charges in case of certain events.

Overnight essentials

It’s easy to forget about life outside of baseball when so much focus is on the game. That being said, remember to pack overnight essentials for you and your Little League player. You’ll want to bring:

  • Pajamas
  • Toiletries
  • Toothbrush
  • Change of shoes
  • Swimsuit if your hotel has a pool
  • Tide Pen for stains
  • Extra set of clothes

Organize your suitcase

It’s easy to toss items into a bag and say you’re packed, but a messy suitcase can cause a lot of trouble when you’re in a rush. To help avoid gameday stress, organize your suitcases so you know exactly where your player’s uniform and equipment are verses where your personal items are kept so nothing gets lost or mixed into the wrong pile. To make organizing even easier, keep baseball equipment in a separate bag all together.
